Royal Trinity Hospice wanted to produce an animation that raised awareness of their support services that make the end of life process more manageable and compassionate while also addressing the misconceptions people may have about hospice care in general.
Through a brainstorming session and a script-writing workshop, CreativeConnection and Royal Trinity Hospice collaborated and explored different ways in telling their story in order to develop the concept of the animation. It was decided that the script should follow the personal story from the patient’s point of view to fully convey the services that Trinity offer, such as therapy, activities, and bereavement counseling, and the misconceptions one could have about hospice care. Voice overs of the patient and a family member create a personal and calming feel to the animation.
A mixed media style was used for this animation, incorporating paper cut-outs and watercolour and utilising different editing techniques such as stop motion. Orange card was used to link to the Trinity brand and the lighthearted way silhouettes were used to reveal the images underneath was a creative way to convey the personal and emotional content of the animation.
The animation forms a rich picture which can be seen at the end of the animation. This gives a whole overview of the animation in simplistic imagery and text that can be used on its own as well as in the animation. Rich pictures are an excellent way to increase the longevity of the animation. Uses included hosting it on a designated website that is available for download, printing it as a poster and displaying it in reception areas and patient rooms, or using it for social media.
This animation was launched during Hospice Care Week 2016 and has been so well-received that it has been chosen as a finalist for a Charity Film Award. Winners will be announced on 15 March 2017 at a gala ceremony at BAFTA in London. Judges will choose the category winners, but voting is open to the public for a People’s Choice Award. The CreativeConnection team consisted of Isolde Godfrey as artist and project manager, Grace Dugdale as script writer and Badj Whipple as editor. They all worked closely with the Trinity team to develop the most engaging script and visual content.
