CreativeConnection returned to Bett 2107, the annual trade show for the education industry, to create Visual Minutes for the Bett Arena from 24 – 27 January 2017 at London Excel. The four day event attracted approximately 35,000 visitors from the global education community, allowing attendees to discover innovative tools and materials for their schools and classrooms, learn about new processes and technologies, and network with other educators.
The artist team from CreativeConnection transformed the walls surrounding the Bett Arena, the main stage showcase of Bett 2017, into a colourful informative mural full of drawings, visitor’s comments, and key information from the speakers’ presentations that were happening inside. Some of the presentation highlights included chef Heston Blumenthal discussing the use of food and cooking in the classroom to inspire creativity, Grammy-winning composer Imogen Heap demonstrating and performing innovations in digital music, British author and advisor on education Sir Ken Robinson explaining ways in which to reform a troubled education system, and actor Tony Robinson talking about his own quest for learning.
Since the theme for this year’s event was about transforming education, the artists interacted with the visitors and collected comments about who they thought were the game changers throughout the history of education and the ways in which we can transform education.
The artists even had help from a drawing machine, provided by the organisers of Bett 2017, that drew portraits of historical figures that have made an impact on society and education. The machine read a digital image of the person and then drew it on a piece of paper. Small strokes from a pen, marker or pencil moved across the page to build up a portrait of the figure. The drawings were then added to the mural with a short description of each person.
